Beckett looks sharp, then Dice-K gets smashed

Josh Beckett Warms UpTwo days ago on ESPN, Josh Beckett delivered 8 strong innings of 2-hit, 10-K ball to nail down a 4-0 win. Oh boy. Looks like Beckett needs Jason Varitek, as he got knocked around when Jarrod Saltalamacchia was behing the plate for him and pitched 8 innings of stellar baseball when Tek caught. Dustin Pedroia turned in his third straight 3-hit game, wrapping up the series at 9-13, absolutely phenomenal. He scored 1 while Marco Scutaro drove in the first and last runs for the Sox to wrap up the series win. Jon Papelbon struck out two more men in a perfect 9th. Meanwhile, C.C. Sabathia lasted only 5 and 2/3 innings, giving up a run and taking the loss. I think that it is a good sign that Beckett pitched well, meaning that the Sox's pitching is rebounding. Or so I thought, until last night...

Coming off a beautiful performance by Josh Beckett, the Sox and I were optimistic about their chances last night against the worst team, the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays were 1-8 and had scored 20 runs coming into last night, and Daisuke Matsuzaka was coming on, and after Beckett pitching such a good game, I hoped that Matsuzaka could do the same. Nope. Dice-K lasted 2 innings and gave up 7 to lose 16-5. The game looked like a good one after the first, when the Rays were up 1-0 on Johnny Damon's homer on the first pitch he saw coming back to Fenway Park. However, the game broke open when the Tampa Bays scored 6 in the second, including a two-run shot off of Sam Fuld, who ended up with 4 hits. Dustin Pedroia went hitless as the Sox got bounced around. Alfredo Aceves made his case by throwing 2.2 innings without a hit while Dan Wheeler gave up 4 runs and Tim Wakefield gave up another 5. Looks like Aceves is pretty good. Today, we hope for a bit more out of Boston, as Jon Lester pitches. Lester will face David Price in what looks off the bat to be a pretty good game.

Trivia
Fuld is a New Hampshire native.
