The Boston Red Sox got yet another quality start from Tim Wakefield as well as leadoff homers in the first and second by Jacoby Ellsbury and Kevin Youkilis to win 6-4 over Toronto. Wakefield pitched seven innings and gave up 3 runs and 9 hits. Meanwhile, Ellsbury knocked in three, two more on a double to give the Sox a 6-3 advantage. Jonathan Papelbon earned his 19th save despite giving up an RBI single to Yunel Escobar in the ninth inning. I wish Pap could start getting some saves without giving up runs. I mean, if the Sox ever have a one-run advantage in the ninth, what's going to happen with Pap? Is he just gonna blow it like he should have a couple nights ago, when it was clear that the runner coming around from second was safe despite a missed call? You know, the great throw by Darnell McDonald? Anyway, Ells and Youk each got three hits and a homer, while Adrian Gonzalez missed his first Red Sox game. I hope that this team can keep going on this beautiful tear against Baltimore tonight. One final note: the Yankees lost last night, bringing Boston to within a half game of first place. Derek Jeter picked up hit number 2,997.
Trivia
Wake now has 198 wins in his career and is eight shy of tying the Red Sox record in that category.
