After finishing off the Houston Astros with a 2-1 win in Houston for the sweep, the Sox headed back home to face the Toronto Blue Jays. Alas, Toronto scored 7 runs in the first 3 innings of John Lackey, who took his eighth loss of the season in a 9-7 loss. The Red Sox came back with a four-run fifth inning, but Alfredo Aceves gave up two more runs and 3 more runs in the eighth for the Sox was not enough to complete the comeback. The one bright spot was Jacoby Ellsbury firing four hits, including a two-run triple, and stealing a base for the Red Sox, who are hoping for a Yankees loss in order to stay only 1.5 games behind New York. I think it is great that Ells can still hit even on bad days for Boston, but I wish Lackey could get better and start actually winning. Also, I can't believe that Adrian Gonzalez's average fell down to .348 after only getting one hit, but at least he knocked in his 75th run of the season. Hopefully Boston can do better tomorrow against Toronto. On an unrelated subject, four Red Sox were named to the AL All-Star team this year: Jacoby Ellsbury, Josh Beckett, David Ortiz, and Adrian Gonzalez. A-Gone is starting at first while Big Papi gets the start as a designated hitter. Hopefully they'll get a lot of hits before the big day.
Trivia
This is Gonzalez's fourth AS game and Ortiz's 6th.
Ortiz, as the winner of the Home Run Derby last year, will choose the other AL participants.
