July 19 game

Daisuke Matsuzaka was very good as he went 6 and 2/3 solid innings against the Oakland Athletics. For Boston's offense, Adrian Beltre crushed his fifteenth home run of the season to deep left center. Eric Patterson smashed a triple and scored on Big Papi David Ortiz's sacrifice fly. Meanwhile, Jonathan Papelbon earned his 21st save.

The win brought the Red Sox to six back of the Yankees. Unfortunately, they remained 3.5 behind Tampa Bay, as the Rays took advantage of a seven-run third to throttle the Orioles, 8-1.

The Yankees start a series with the LA Angels of Anaheim tonight, while the Sox continue their monster West Coast trip with Tim Wakefield on the mound tonight opposing Dallas Braden, who tossed a perfect game on Mother's Day this year.

Trivia
Tim Wakefield is the current player with the most years in Red Sox service. (He joined the club in 1995)
Matsuzaka earned his second straight win, improving to 7-3
